Diabetes Service
The Diabetes Team provides specialist diabetes care throughout the District to both inpatients and outpatients. Consultant clinics are held weekly at The Diabetes Centre located on the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary site, at Leigh Infirmary and also the Thomas Linacre Centre.
The team works closely with other specialist services involved in diabetes care, newly diagnosed being referred directly to Dietetics, Podiatry and Retinopathy Screening to provide an efficient and effective integrated service.
Diabetes Specialist Nurses
The Diabetes Specialist Nurses based across two sites hold nurse run clinics daily at the Diabetes Centre and from the Diabetes Office based at Leigh Infirmary they also provide specialist care with paediatrics and pregnancy. The Intermediate Care Specialist Nurses hold clinics at various locations within the Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Clinical Commissioning Group.
Nutrition and Dietetic Service
Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles runs the ‘Lose Weight Feel Great’ service for over 18’s in Wigan. Components within this service are delivered by various providers and include:
- Community weight management service
- Men’s weight management service
- Healthy Routes health improvement service
- Specialist weight management service
- A healthy lifestyle during pregnancy
The Council commissions a children’s weight management service for those under 18. Referrals will not be made into NDPP from weight management providers. You can contact the team directly by phoning 01942 496 49.
Podiatry
Podiatry is a medical specialty dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the human foot. You can complete the online application form to access this service
Community Services

Diabetes Community Service
Diabetes Community Services provides a nurse-led comprehensive service for patients with type 2 diabetes supporting patients to achieve glycaemic control. This includes giving high-quality information and advice for newly diagnosed patients with a DESMOND programme, insulin initiation, and titration and ongoing review.
Support Groups
If you live in Wigan or the surrounding area and would like to meet people with the same condition, swap information and advice and make friends there is a group which meets every first Monday of the month except bank holidays.
Meetings are held at St. Anne’s Parish Centre, on Church Lane, Shevington, at 07.30 p.m. For further details email shevingtondiabeticgroup@gmail.com.

Whether you just have a few pounds to lose or more than that, if you are ready to lose weight, HealthyRoutes can help. ‘Lose Weight Feel Great’ service for over 18’s.

Health Research Opportunities
Help BEAT Diabetes is part of the Research for the Future family, an NHS campaign encouraging people in Wrightington, Wigan, Leigh and across Greater Manchester to get involved in health research.
Health research has the power to change lives. It is through research that the NHS is able to develop better treatments, as well as improve diagnosis, prevention, care and quality of life. Be part of the change and help develop medicines for the future.
